The Concert on the Green Young Artist Concerto Competition was a great success in 2012. Over 30 talented vocalists and instrumentalists participated from Clay County music programs! Ten musicians from the senior division and three from the junior division competed in the finals on April 23, 2012.

Two first place winners were chosen from the senior division who will perform on May 27th at the Concert on the Green at Magnolia Point Golf and Country Club in Green Cove Springs. The festivities begin at noon and many of the competition finalists will perform during this time. The young artist winners will perform at 8:00 pm accompianied by the renowned Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.

Senior Division Winners

Marie Smithwick

The first place vocalist winner was Marie Smithwick. Marie is a senior at Fleming Island High School and is active in the National Honor Society, International Thespians and Chorus. She recently played the lead role in the school's musical, "Bingo, the Winning Musical" and "The Pajama Game". This year, Marie was chosen as part of the All-State Honor Choir, and the UNF Honor Choir. She is also very involved at her church, Orange Park United Methodist, singing with their Youth Choir. In college, she plans to major in vocal performance at Florida State University in the fall.


Nicholas Elliott

The first place instrumentalist prize was awarded to Nicholas Elliott for his trumpet performance. Nicholas is currently a freshman at Oakleaf High School and participates in the Oakleaf High School Marching Band, Wind Symphony (top band) and Jazz Band programs under the direction of Martin I. Gaines. For the past two years, Nicholas has been selected for the All-County Band. He has received Superior ratings at District Solo and Ensemble for three consecutive years. As a freshman, Nicholas advanced to State Solo and Ensemble in Orlando and received a Superior rating. He was the only freshman from OHS to advance to the state level. Nicholas has been an active member of the Clay County Community Band and recently joined the Clay County Swing Band. He also plays regularly with the Praise Band at his church. Nicholas is under private instruction with trumpet master Charles Matthiessen. At this time, he is considering a college major in trumpet performance.


Keatin Cecrle

The second place award in the Senior Division was awarded to Keatin Cecrle for his marimba performance. Keatin is a junior at Clay High School. Keatin is active in the Clay High Band, Clay High's Mens Ensemble and A'Capella Group, receiving best percussionist, the Instrumentalist Magazine Musicianship Award and First Chair Award in his sophomore year. He is also very involved at his church, First Baptish Church of Middleburg, playing with their Orchestra. For two years, Keatin was chosen as part of the All-County Band, and received superior with distinction at the State Solo and Ensemble competition. Currently, he studies under Eric Proctor at the University of North Florida.


Calie Procter

The 3rd place award in the Senior Division was awarded to vocalist Calie Procter. Calie is a senior at Clay High School. Calie is an active member in her school's Show Choir, A'Capella Group and Women's Quartet. She recently joined the choir at the First Baptist Church of Middleburg. Calie has been singing her entire life, but a little over a year ago, started taking private lessons with Michelle Munley.


Junior Division Winners

The 1st place winner in the Junior Division was Selah Welton. Selah is in the 8th grade and is homeschooled. Besides the violin, she also plays the piano and the flute. Selah has been a part of the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra for five years. She is a member of the American Heritage Girls and enjoys reading and expressing herself artistically through writing, drawing, painting, craft-making and photography.

The Honorable Mention prize was awarded to Lindsay Thacker who is currently homeschooled in the 6th grade. She enjoys soccer, church orchestra, and her church youth group. She is currently studying with Les Roettges and Kathleen James.
