From Angela Powers, 2010 Concert on the Green Chair:

Another summer is winding down and fall will soon be upon us. To the Rotary Club of Fleming Island it is the start of the Concert on the Green season. In 2009 RCFI agreed to take over the monumental task of continuing a 20 year community tradition. There was no question that the inaugural year of hosting the concert was going to be a challenge and after working diligently with the past chairs and fellow Rotarians to present a great event, the unruly May weather caused the cancellation of the 2009 concert. RCFI has reorganized and is trailblazing into a new concert season along side the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. I am proud to say that I have accepted the position as the chair person for the 2010 concert and I am very excited to be working with the symphony, my fellow Rotarians, and the great citizens of Clay County to present the 21st annual Concert on the Green.

The students of Clay County have long enjoyed the competition and scholarship opportunities provided by the Concert. I am proud to say that we were able to achieve our goal of increasing those scholarships in the 2009 season. In just the past year, over $9,000 in scholarships and grants were awarded to the young adult music and arts winners and their prospective schools. The Rotary Club of Fleming Island is proud to be a part of this wonderful forum for our young folks and are going to continue to support our students in 2010.

I will be providing updates to the community to encourage involvement and to keep the community abreast of our progress. The 2010 concert will be a fun filled, patriotic day filled with activities for the families of Clay County. The lawn of St Johns River Community College will be adorned in Sky divers, fireworks, butterfly releases and children’s activities. Local vendors such as Mojo’s smokehouse BBQ and McAllisters Deli will be providing food and drinks if you do not choose to bring you own. The NAS Battery will be returning to provide their cannons for the Symphony’s 1812 Overture. Most importantly the citizens of our community will be there with their friends and families enjoying a beautiful symphony performance under the majestic oaks of the college.

There will be fundraisers held throughout the fall and winter months to help subsidize this event. We ask that you please look out for those events and join us for good times and fun. Handsome packages have been created for our patrons and sponsors. If you would like to become a patron, sponsor or volunteer at this great community event please contact the Rotary Club of Fleming Island or visit our website for updates, information, and ticket sales. Our websites are www.concertonthegreen.com and www.rotaryclubfi.org.

Thank you for your continued support, we look forward to hearing from you and seeing you soon!
