CONCERT ON THE GREEN - PAST AND PRESENT

PRESENT

The Concert On The Green is now in its 20th year and is the largest event of its kind in Clay County.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary and the 150th anniversay of Clay County, the concert will be free to the public. (Ticket Information.)

It will be held on the beautifully landscaped and serene area in front of Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts which is in front of the St. Johns River Community College, 183 College Drive, Orange Park. (MAPS)

Each year the Concert On The Green hosts a symphony concert for thousands of local residents in a beautiful outdoor setting. The concert is the most attended Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra performance outside of Symphony Hall. For many Clay County residents this is their only opportunity to hear a live performance. This event serves those who may not be able to afford, or make the trip downtown, to hear the Symphony perform.

However, the Concert On The Green is much more than just an annual concert. Each year we host the Young Artist Scholarship Competitions in which music and art students compete for scholarships. These two competitions encourage and support the artistic abilities of Clay County students. All proceeds from the Concert On The Green benefit Clay County Schools’ Music and Art programs.

As with any event of this magnitude, scores of volunteers are needed to create the unique family experience provided by the Concert on the Green year after year. If you are interested in volunteering for this very worthwhile and fun event please contact Linda at 276-7686.

This year’s entertainment and events, in addition to the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, will include:

  • an audience of concert goers, picnicking with their families in front of the Symphony Orchestra on the beautiful Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts lawn.
  • pre-concert entertainment by local musical performers and choral groups
  • a sky-diving show to herald the start of the performance

  • pre-concert activities for the children including an Instrument Zoo, arts and crafts provided by the Art Guild of Orange Park and The Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art (JMOMA), as well as other fun activities.

  • the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra performing light classical and pops arrangements
  • a rousing grand finale of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture accompanied by cannons provided by the Saluting Battery, NAS JAX
  • a spectacular fireworks display. What a special night under the stars of beautiful Clay County.

Come join us and thousands of your fellow Clay County residents on Sunday May 25, 2008.

MISSION STATEMENT

To organize an annual event for Clay County families that combines a live symphony orchestra with a natural, beautiful setting. The primary purpose of the Concert On The Green is to nurture and showcase the artistic talents of Clay County students, and to inspire their participation in future events. At the same time, our wish is to heighten the community’s awareness and appreciation of the arts and arouse the desire to explore and develop individual talents and abilities.

HISTORY

The Concert On The Green was co-founded by Joy McCumber Myers in 1987. Joy Myers has been the guiding light for the concert since its inception. The Concert On The Green was created to provide a magnificent natural setting for families to come together to enjoy a wonderful evening of diverse musical entertainment involving the participation of Clay County students and schools.

The first Concert On The Green was held the last week of May in 1988 and featured Jacksonville’s own C. Carter Nice, Jr. conducting the Starlight Symphonette. In the years since, the Concert On The Green has evolved into a multi-faceted event featuring the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra performing light classical and pop arrangements.

A Clay County student, chosen via a countywide competition, performs with the orchestra as the featured soloist for the evening.
