More about Emily:

My name is Emily Sulzer and I have been involved with music since I was six years old. I began by playing on piano, receiving multiple superior ratings at solo and ensemble festivals for piano solos. From there, I began studying oboe at Lakeside Junior High School under the direction of Mr. Jim Layton and made the All-County Honor Band in both my 7th and 8th grade years. I was also a member of the Lakeside Junior High School Jazz band for two years. I studied oboe under Mr. Charles McGee, and earned superior ratings in Solo and Ensemble Festivals. I joined the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra (JSYO) Repertory Orchestra my 8th grade year, and was the youngest woodwind performer. I received the “Musician of the Year” award, and the “Jazz Band Member of the Year” award for piano.

11th Grade, Fleming Island High School

I began my 9th grade year as the principal oboist of the Fleming Island High School Symphonic Band and the All-County Honor Band. I began studying under Mrs. Claudia Minch of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. I joined the JSYO Philharmonic Orchestra, where we performed the “World’s Largest Concert” on nationwide PBS television. I also worked at a local restaurant as an oboe soloist. I enjoyed playing with a JSYO chamber group, where I performed at the Cummer Museum, the Florida Times Union Center, and on the local Channel 4 News.

In 10th grade, I made the All-County Honor Band and received a superior rating at the Solo and Ensemble Festival. I played clarinet in the FIHS Marching Band, and continued with the FIHS Symphonic Band and the JSYO Philharmonic Orchestra. For my 11th grade year, I participated in the JSYO chamber group program, JSYO Philharmonic Orchestra, Fleming Island High School Symphonic Band, and Florida State University’s annual Tri-State Music Festival. Recently, I participated in the JSYO Concerto Competition, and received 1st chair in the All-County Honor Band. I also participated in a Double Reed Class at a local University. For several years, I have performed with the Orange Park United Methodist Church Orchestra. I also played at Island View Baptist Church.

I particularly enjoy helping others to learn an appreciation of music. I have volunteered for several years at Mr. Layton’s Summer Band Camp at Lakeside Junior High. I have been honored to perform with the JSYO Philharmonic Orchestra in the annual “Kids for Kids Concert”, and I have visited several local elementary schools to perform and encourage the students’ interest in music. I have given private lessons to several local young musicians.

My other interests include National Honor Society, Church Youth Group, Varsity Tennis Team, Medical Explorers, Science Club, providing illustrations for the Fleming Island High School Golden Quill Literary Arts Magazine, and enrollment in the Cambridge Program of Studies. I work as a lifeguard at a local pool, and I have also volunteered at a therapeutic horse-back-riding center, an arts and crafts store, and a dance studio in Fleming Island. I am interested in pursuing a career in music or medicine
